Paulsen's memoir of growing up during World War II, and the physical and emotional violence he encountered in the adult world.

Nightjohn escaped from slavery, but he came back to teach others how to read even though he knew the punishment was dismemberment. Twelve-year old Sarny is willing to take the risk to learn. Wonderful book and the basis for a Disney Channel Premiere Film.
